Wandering around the streets of Berkeley, California in the wee hours of the night, the architecture and lights of the staircase on the outside of this parking garage caught my attention as it has an almost Ansel Adams type vibe.

I shot it in B&W to give a moody feeling with the contrast of the repetitive structure and the lights against the darkness of the surrounding environment.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as I wandered aimlessly through the middle of the night in Berkeley, California.

Time

I woke up in the middle of the night around 3am and unable to go back to sleep, I grabbed my camera and went hunting for a unique shot.

Lighting

I intentionally shot this in black and white versus color because I wanted to capture the contrast of the lights, repetitive nature of the staircase cases, and the almost Ansel Adams type feel of the staircases.

Equipment

This was shot in B&W using a Nikon D200, 17-55mm lens, and no flash.

Inspiration

The contrast and repetitive lines framed in the shot caught my eye initially.

Editing

There is minimal post-processing of this photo. Cleaned up the noise a bit and sharpened the image globally.

In my camera bag

Nikon 200 17-55mm 80-200mm SB-800 Various filters Tripod Monopod

Feedback

Theres no advice for going out to seek this type of image other than if you see something that looks interesting, envision what you want the final product to look like before you press down the shutter button. That will help you to look at B&W vs color, focal length, contrast, lighting, etc.
