Location
This shot was taken at the World Heritage Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. It was a cold, crisp and clear wintry day, I just loved the jet trails in the sky, they just added a bit of excitement to the photograph. I am a self-taught photographer, learning everyday ... ;))Time
Tramping around on the grounds of the Kinderdijk at the end of the afternoon, this is one of my favourite times to be there. No chitter-chatter of tourists or of them trying to get the same picture over my shoulder ;) yay! Happy dance! The wind was biting icily at my nose, while I was sniffing around and checking out the different angles for this shot. In the background, one of the 'gentle giants' as I like to call the Dutch windmills, is cloaked in white cloth for extensive renovations.Lighting
I really wanted to get a good rippled reflection in the water of the windmill that was standing above the waterline, thanx to the wind! The added stripes of the jets in the sky were actually and added bonus, sending out a striking difference.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Mark 5D mark iii, Canon 24-70mm large angle lens, hand held.Inspiration
I was looking for a slightly different angle to all the typical tourist/postcard photographs that one sees, this was a challenge to myself, to find something just a little different. I think this just nailed it. With the tranquil waters in the foreground and the 'gentle giant' in the background in a white cloak, patiently waiting for the renovations to get done.Editing
Landscape photography usually needs a fair amount of post-processing, I mainly use Lightroom as I shoot in RAW.In my camera bag
My camera bag is lying ready in the cupboard so that I can pack it in a moments notice. I have two Canon 5D Mark iii bodies, and two lenses with me. The 24-70 and the 70-200both ultrasonic. Of course I always have lipstick and some tissues handy. A large black plastic bag in case I want to lay flat in the grass so that I don't get clotted with duck poopies ... ;) some wet wipes are handy too as my shoes are normally clotted with mud and poopies, and some change for a cup of tea when I am doneFeedback
Kinderdijk is a world heritage. It is worth spending a day there, may I encourage you to go at the start or the end of the day, then the lighting is great and there are very little tourists to get in the way. As added bonus I often meet other photographers there and we exchange some valuable information and encouragement.
