Location
This photograph was taken in the greater Kruger National Park. It was dusty, dry, and my throat was parched, my eyes red and itchy. Enough water with me to rescue my parched throat. This old tree was apparently struck by lightening a while back.Time
This shot was taken at the end of the day, just after 17:30, wintertime. We had been on an afternoon/evening safari searching for wild animals. The ride was dusty, my bones aching from all the bumps and duckingk to evade the wild scrub and bush scratching our bodies. Our eyes and the shadows were playing havoc with our imaginations, eagerly wanting every single shadow we saw to be one of the evasive lion or leopard, imagine that! I sacrificed my drinks and snax to get this shot, it was worth it.Lighting
While the other participants were chatting and drinking their sundowners I kept looking over my shoulder at the setting sun. As soon as the sun was behind the hills it started painting the clouds in spectacular colours. It was awesome seeing the sun paint the wisps of clouds in the sky. No artificial lighting involved. I was so busy capturing this that I had forgotten my drinks and snax, was worth the sacrifice, don't you agree?Equipment
Canon 5D Miii & EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L II USM. No tripod, just a little rock to support my camera.Inspiration
We were actually supposed to be looking at the wildlife that came to quench their thirst at the water. The sundown caught my attention and I could just not let it go. I needed to be quick and accurate as the sun sets quickly in Africa, and I love sunsets. Down on my belly, close to a very smelly turd, later I heard it was hyena turd.Editing
The landscape photographs need a little post-processing, I always use LightRoom for my edits. In my camera bag
I always take both my Canon 5d Miii, Canon 24-70 and my 70-200mm. A notebook & pen, yes I still write by hand. I cannot live without my lipstick, apparently, we women eat tons of lipstick each year, capice?? ;) peppermints, a sewing kit, some wet wipes, headache tablets, plasters, water, eye drops. I am sure if you come and turn my camera bag upside down you will find much more in it, like secrets??Feedback
South Africa has some beautiful sunsets, you need to watch and be quick, as the sun is gone before you know it. It is good to be ready half an hour before the sun starts setting. A slap-stick is good too as the mosquitoes carried me away here. Always good to notice if there is clear sky with a bit of cloud to give nuance to the sunset. The tree was perfect, burnt black and bare, standing starkly in the sky.
