I must visit when I get back! There are so many interesting places to photograph in Netherlands.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken at Kinderdijk, South Holland, a world heritage.

Time

The gentle giants with their arms swaying in the wind have a soft spot in my heart, I love going to visit them. The shot was taken @ 16:12. When I got there around 14:00 the tourists and bicycles were cluttered everywhere,I needed to practice some patience.

Lighting

I waited for the sun to give the reeds a little more of a golden glow in the late afternoon sun.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark iii and Canon EF24-70mm f2.8 II USM lens

Inspiration

I have been here a few times, as i love these windmills dearly, a unique heritage. I needed to get a blue clear sky in the background so this was the day. It was loaded with tourists when I got there, so I needed to hang around and wait until most of them had left. I wanted the reeds to have a golden glow too, so I waited a little longer until the wintery sun was hanging lower in the sky. I did want some tourists in this picture, as tourism is also what keeps Kinderdijk alive. I found a way behind the golden reeds, ducked down, and got the guy with the red coat in nicely. There is so much to see in this picture.

Editing

Landscape pictures need a little extra time, processing was done in Lightroom Classic.

In my camera bag

First and foremost I pack my two Canon 5D Mark iii's into my backpack, along with my EF24-70mm and my 70-200mm, both of them Canon f2.8L II USM (I have something with red ;)) I like to have robust and heavy equipment it gives me confidence and quality. A bottle of water. Pen and notebook to make notes for future reference. Lense cleaning cloths. Sunglasses. A cap. Headache tablets, plasters, and above all my lipstick ;)) Yes I slather my lips with this regularly ;))

Feedback

Kinderdijk is a place one can visit more often, take along some eats as a picnic here is a real treat. If your legs are not the walking type then there is a boat you can catch, art a small price, to glide past these amazing windmills. Coming back time and time again, in different seasons, makes it more beautiful, like in Spring when all the birds and fowls have young, the little ducklings and egrets are so cute. High summer when the grass and reeds are thick and lush, and if you are lucky to have a storm brewing you have some dark skies that contrast marvellously. Wintertime at sunrise or sunset when it is frosty or covered in snow, it is like a fairy tale come true. Just watch out for the tourists on bicycles though, they think by ringing the bicycle bell that they have the right of way, this leads to some hysterical (for me then) moments ;))
