Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my first trip to England, in September 2019. We were at Haytor in Dartmoor and there were three climbers working together on the verticle face. This climber got "stuck" here and was trying to figure out a way to climb further up on this path.

Time

This was taken about mid day: we had spent some time on the moor itself before we climbed up to Haytor.

Lighting

This was natural light: it was a very bright day, with lots of shadows and strong colours.

Equipment

This was shot using my Sony Cyber-shot RX10 IV camera, which I had purchased especially for this trip to England. I usually use a Canon 7D Mark II and multiple Canon lenses, but I knew they would be far too heavy to lug around on this trip to England. I was exceptionally pleased with the results of the Sony...because it was new and I was unfamiliar with it yet, I shot everything in Auto! At night I would go through the thousands of photos I had taken that day and there were so many of them, like this one, that I was happy with.

Inspiration

While in England, I took photos of everything from flora and fauna to landscapes. We spent quite a while near the top of Haytor on our second day in England, watching these fellows work at climbing the face of Haytor.

Editing

This photo was cropped minimally in post to bring it to a 4x3 aspect, and the shadows were raised a bit since it was taken in full sunshine and the rock crevises were dark.

In my camera bag

I normally pack my Canon camera and the lens(es) that I will be using that day: if taking photos of birds, then it would be my 100-400 with extender, for instance. For this trip, I only took the Sony RX10 IV and for the most part it did the job very well, at much less than a quarter of the weight of my usual kit. This camera does a good job of taking wide landscape photos, then zooming in on distant views or almost macro views.

Feedback

My advice is to take a lot of photos of everything you see...I am always looking for the "money-shot" and it could be any subject in any place. "Money-shot" for me is that photo that brings my memories clearly back to life when I am viewing them.
