Behind The Lens

Location

Location of this shot was taken at Point Reyes Beach.

Time

This shot was taken in mid-day. Normally, it would have been a very bright and sunny day during the Summer months in Northern California but at Point Reyes Beach it was a foggy and chilly morning and scattered clouds during the afternoon with some wind. I don't mind having either since having scattered clouds would give me the perfect diffuser and under a sunny day, would give my photo a dramatic look.

Lighting

I went with the natural light given that day. The natural light lit her skin creating contrast to her outfit and the uneven backdrop of the rock wall or sea wall gave some texture and dimension for the shot.

Equipment

My very loyal Canon 5D MKIII with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens is what I used that day.

Inspiration

I am a fan of retro looks. I wanted to incorporate modern and classic fashion that would work well in a one-of-a-kind bathing suit. She's tough and can still look sexy at the beach.

Editing

I did some minor light and color balancing in lightroom and adjustment layers in photoshop.

In my camera bag

My Canon camera, 1-2 lens, extra battery packs, and a huge 7' umbrella in case I need the light diffused.

Feedback

Having a vision is the most important in my mind. If you can't picture of it in your head of how you want the end results to be, you will have a hard trying to figure out what to do. The model/s, the type of clothing, makeup, location, and even weather plays a part in telling a story in a photograph. Sometimes you have to scout a location to make sure it is really where you want to have that shot taken, and sometimes you just wing it. At this location, I just went with what nature had given me and the photoshoot was a success! I am grateful to be able to inspire someone in this community to just go out there and create with very minimal equipment.
