Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my Living Room with my white wall as backdrop. I am a self-taught photographer.

Time

This photo was taken mid-day indoors and right before we headed out to do some outdoor urban photoshoot.

Lighting

I used a simple ring light and a tripod in order to give the model a soft glow to her face and earrings, drawing attention to her face.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D MIII paired with a 24-70 f/2.8L II.

Inspiration

I had a 70s inspired theme photoshoot that day and before we headed out for the photoshoot, I wanted to do a head shot of each model with just my ring light. I really enjoy the process in creating a still photo. It's not just about clicking the shutter button, there's so much more to it. I love the makeup, accessories, clothes, hairstyles/hairpieces, backdrops, model/subjects, lighting equipment or natural light, and post process that make a photo. I am fully involved in the creative process as well as post process.

Editing

Yes, I did some post processing to remove very little blemishes since this model had beautiful skin. I also used adjustment layers to give the photo a more even tone throughout the photo and also bring out the colors from the makeup. This was a very simple photo with very little post processing work done.

In my camera bag

I always carry light so in my bag there is my Canon 5D MIII, one or two lens depending on what I am shooting that day, some extra batteries, and my trusty 5 in 1 reflector.

Feedback

This shot is actually very easy and simple. Having an idea of how you want the headshot to turn out would help in directing your model/subject. Make sure focus is on the eyes and posing of the model is also important, the face is stretched towards the camera while the body is pulled away from the camera. The catch light makes the model's eyes come alive. There was no other light source besides the ring light in this headshot and again it was indoors. I had the camera settings at f2.8 giving it that DOF, 1/350, and iso 200. Steady hands is always helpful but if you don't have steady hands then a tripod would be ideal. I like to be able to move freely and take shots in different angles so I hardly use a tripod unless I really need to. Thank you View Bug for choosing my photo for this award. I hope this will inspire my fellow photographers to create beautiful photos using very minimal gear!
