Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the annual Great Reno Balloon Race in Reno, Nevada.

Time

We woke up early to get to the site just as the glow was about to start. As the sun rose we were in position to photography some of the first colorful balloons to be launched. This photography was taken at 8:10 am PST.

Lighting

What more can you say about the light? It was early morning about an hour after sunrise. The lighting wasn't nothing short of perfection!

Equipment

I was using my Canon 5D mark II. While switching back and forth between my Manfrotto Tri-pod and hand held, I also was switching between 2 lenses as well depending on the shot and distance of the balloon or balloons I was interested in.This particular photo was taken on the Tri-pod for the sake of getting tired of hand holding the camera too long. The lens used was a Canon 25-105mm.

Inspiration

The combination of beautiful colorful balloons with puffy clouds and blue skies was inspiration enough! This was my first BIG balloon event where I could enjoy the colors, photograph balloons and have a nice time as well. Having my girlfriend Julie with me, who as was also taking photos, made it all the more special.

Editing

Just a little bit.The sky and clouds were there, so that was great. I gave the balloons a little saturation and a touch of brightness to make them POP, so to speak. The usual touch of sharpness at the end. It was already pretty good. I also printed this out and it looks REALLY FANTASTIC!

In my camera bag

Normally, I have the Canon 24-105mm, Canon 70-200mm with or without a Sigma 2x converter, and a Sigma 12-24 Wide angle. Also the Manfrotto Tri-pod and or Mono-pod.

Feedback

Get up early! And pray you have great conditions.Be patient, do your homework before, and never think you know it all. Because you don't. There is always something to learn. And I continue to do that.
