Behind The Lens

Location

This portrait was taken in my studio.

Time

The shoot was in the afternoon but I tend to black out the daylight to keep consistent colour temperatures.

Lighting

When using studio light I always meter the shot to avoid over-exposing the skin which cannot be recovered in post-processing. For low-key shots I use small static daylight bulbs against the backdrop to differentiate between subject and background.

Equipment

Even in a studio I often employ a tripod and light meter. Sometimes combining studio flash with daylight static lighting helps solve lighting challenges! My other favourite accessory is to add a grid to the soft box to remove light spillage.

Inspiration

Invariably I work with the model on a mood board and adapt according to what works and what doesn’t the bobble hat just seemed to give a great look to the model and achieved a strong triangular shape within the composition.

Editing

Some dodge and burn around the hair and skin to give a glow to the complexion.

In my camera bag

I stick faithfully to my Canon 5D RS and for portraits the incredible 70-200mm 2.8 L, Prime 85mm and workhorse 24-105mm. Carbon fibre tripod, Bowen’s flash and soft boxes. Static daylight bulbs in softbox.

Feedback

Set up on tripod, check colour temp, test shot to meter. Generally I use around f11 to get a sharp result (it’s easy to soften parts of the image but impossible to sharpen). To avoid lots of blink and squint shots ask the subject to gently close their eyes and then countdown for them to open - the eyes are generally at their best when relaxed. Keep composition in mind and pose. Experiment - take a few shots and vary tripod height to find what really works.
