Behind The Lens

Location

The edge of the stairs going down to my laundry room.

Time

About 8:30 am on a Sunday. I usually do laundry at 7, then switch it over to the dryer by about 8. I saw this guy on the wall and went back for my camera to get a few shots.

Lighting

West Coast defused by overcast cloud, maybe some assisted bounce from the rain on the cement.

Equipment

I think I was freehand holding my Canon 650D, with a 28mm-200mm lens.

Inspiration

I think it was the macro and life at work on a small scale aspect of it. The yellow of the shell contrasted nicely with the green of the moss. While I have seen snails in the yard, and seen them move about, I don't think I've ever seen one eating. It was that little detail of, "there's something you don't always see."

Editing

I think the only steps I took in post, was some white balancing and a little sharpening in Viveza from the Nik collection.

In my camera bag

These days I travel light. The camera is usually in hand, within the bag is a flash (or two) and master/slave remote, and extra batteries. I make sure there is a small stash of business cards, all in good shape (never a good idea to give-out cards with dog ears). I don't like to use large memory cards, so I'll have half-a-dozen smaller cards in an external pocket, where it's easy to grab.

Feedback

While this is essentially a macro scene, It's not shot with a macro lens. Step back and zoom in to get a closer shot. If you're zoomed in too much and worried about shake or motion blur, brace yourself on a wall or the ground.
