Behind The Lens

Location

In July of 2010 Victoria, Canada hosted Northwest Deuce Days and hundreds of cars lined six blocks of the Inner Harbour area. This particular car was on Government Street, directly across from the Empress Hotel.

Time

According to the info in the Exif this image was shot at 8:46am. For this show I find the crowds are thinner earlier in the day.

Lighting

It was a good sunny day, perfect for getting the colour of these cars, but also for bringing lots of people out to see them.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 400D (XTi) and a 28-200mm lens, I rarely use a tripod, just find them too clunky for what I shoot. The day was to sunny and bright to have needed a flash, but it would have sat in my bag. For safety reasons I always make sure I have Hoya UV filter on my lens, easier to replace that if it gets scratched than the $650 lens.

Inspiration

I really liked the length of the blue flames across the hood, and the shades of blue were something I hadn't seen on a lot of the other cars at the show.

Editing

I always make adjustments to images in Photoshop CS3, for this one I found the people in the background distracting, the woman on the right has a colourful yellow and red bag, the woman with the camera phone behind the car is wearing a red top and the guy in the far right of the frame is in a purple shirt. I found that all of that distracted from the subject, so I created a monochrome layer and used a layer mask to show the car in colour.

In my camera bag

I carry a sling bag that my wife bought me from DeviantArt, when they still had such stuff. In it is my flash (430EX II), my 18-55mm lens, two spare camera batteries, a couple of packs of batteries for my flash, extra CF cards and a handful of business cards from VistaPrint. Sometimes I'll have a fold-up reflector hanging off the side.

Feedback

Car shows are great with the variety of vehicles that show-up. Get every angle of the vehicle that you think looks good, you can weed out pics afterwards, you won't get the opportunity to go back for more shots. The more people there are the harder it is to get a shot of the car from farther away, but if you're not to far back, and you're polite and have patience you'll get your shot. As for post editing, look for ways to eliminate distractions from your subject, here I used desaturation, I could have used a gaussian blur or motion blur to to affect to background too. I always use layers and masks in my images because its non-destructive. In this case I placed a monochrome layer under the colour layer and masked out everything, except the car.
