Southwest Oklahoma......Saw this today!
...A couple of weeks ago, we came across a juvenile Mississippi Kite that had left its nest. It was really hot outside (109 degrees). The Kite was in the middle of a dry field looking a bit helpless, so we put out a cup for it to drink some water. Eventually it made its way to some shade.
...So, a couple of weeks have past and sure enough we heard some bird calls and low and behold it had survived. Nearby, a Mississippi Kite was on a power line. A few minutes past and the Kite flew around and descended into the huge tree where the juvenile was still making dependency calls.
... Then, something completely unexpected happened...
....The Kite (white adult) gave the juvenile (dark, smaller) a cicada it had plucked out of the air.....I am not kidding.
....Soon after, the falcon flew around in the air really high, made some passes....and left the area.
..
Although viewbug reads the metadata to this shot as 123mm, it is actually being shot at the 35mm equivalent of 720mm....add that to the fact that these Mississippi Kites are very high up, in a huge tree, on a gusty day, with the leaves and branches swaying back and forth quite a bit,....you can understand how lucky i was to get this photo..the falcons being very animated while greeting each other during the food exchange.....the whole thing took place in less than 5 seconds...if anyone out there understands wildlife...then you understand the uniqueness of this moment...whatever the case, it was pretty wild!
