I had always wanted this particular composition for one of my Milky Way shots. But it is challenging to have both a lighthouse and the Milky Way simultaneously present at the right moment. That is until this moment here in Portland. Another one in my bucket list checked.
This was captured at 9.55pm in Cape Nelson, Portland Victoria. The weather for the night was very raw. Extremely high winds, partly cloudy and erratic rain. It just suddenly started to rain when I arrived and the rain were practically flying almost horizontally passsing my car's windscreen. Then it stopped after 5 minutes. I looked up the sky and there was this patch of clear sky, but also seeing more clouds floating towards the Milky Way. I grabbed my gears, quickly set up, holding on to my tripod for life for fear that it will topple under the wind's force. In my haste of setting up under the not so conducive conditions, I had accidentally moved my focal range to from 14 mm to 17mm without realising. Grrrr.... Silly me.
And after about 10 minutes, I was actually wondering why is it suddenly felt bright and the stars had also faded away. I turned my head behind and saw the moon in full glory. Little did I know that during this shot, the moon was actually hidden behind the thick clouds, thus creating the pitch black moment. And after about 10 mins later, it started to rain again. Wow...!!! talk about timing and luck, here's the outcome.
Cape Nelson Lighthouse, Portland with the Milky Way in the background. The glow from the light house's light beacon is caused by the reflection of the light against the sea mist created by the strong waves hitting the cape being blown upwards by the extremely high winds.
Settings; 17mm, ISO 3200, f-2.8, 20 secs, manual focus, remote shutter release
