Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photo during a Kim Weston workshop at the Boyer YL ranch in Wyoming. I was practicing making portraits inside the old ranch house. A cup of coffee was brought to the model and Insisted that she drink it then rather that waiting until my turn with her was over. I thought it would help the picture. The yellow background is sunlight through old yellow curtains.

Time

Picture was made about 11am in mid July.

Lighting

The lighting is just sunlight filtering into the dark ranch house through a smallish window and a yellow/orange curtain.

Equipment

I used my standard portrait setup. Sorry A7Riii with a Sony 24-105mm lens. I like the lightly longer focus reach of the 105mm over a 24-70mm zoom.

Inspiration

I wanted to practice using natural light rather than studio lighting. While some of my pictures on this workshop took advantage of full sunlight I'm afraid that all too often I backed off and tried to convert sunlight into studio light, as in this case. I liked the results though.

Editing

Very little post processing. Added contrast to eyes and did a careful cropping.

In my camera bag

I normally just carry what I expect to use, so I didn't even bring a bag for this day. I do note that my camera strap has room for extra batteries and SD cards.

Feedback

Get to know the model. Work with the model. Share your work with her/him as you shoot. Let them know what you are trying to do. Get their creative inputs, after all if they are professional models they are likely to have more experience than you do. Again work with the models, respect the models, listen to the models. And share your work with them both during and after the shoot
