Abby, Kiersten and I have been planning a duo shoot. I have never really shot with two models together before, so suggested our local Winterlight would be a great place to have a practice, as well as a meet and greet. I think we spent more of the evening running around, testing the rides and constantly laughing!
This shoot was just super casual, with no stress. The entire set was a hit and miss though, but did manage to get a handful of great shots. I'm really excited to do a proper shoot with these two now.

Location
This was shot at an annual local event called Winterlight. I had assumed it would be a festival of fake snow and ice rinks, however it ended up being a rather small carnival. The original plan was to shoot light snowy wonderland photos, however we still used the location to our advantage, and changed our theme to a more streetstyle grungy feel.Time
After shooting a few images at dusk, I decided the light was still too bright for me. So we hit a few rides, and as soon as it was nighttime skys, I grabbed the camera and went on the low light challenge!Lighting
I adore shooting in lowlight. I love the challenge of it. I am no way insisting that I am brilliant at it though. I think, when shooting in low light, the main thing to remember, is that a good 70-80% of photos will not work out perfectly. Try to utilize every little bit of light you have around you to help naturally light up the image. I pump my ISO up a fair bit, and I open the aperture pretty wide. Do not be afraid of grain. Embrace a little grungy grain in your images. I also suggest, if you need to have a longer shutter speed, do take a tripod. If your model or subject can stand perfectly still for 5 seconds straight, you will be winning. All in all, my best advice, is to go out and have fun in lowlight. There is no right or wrong way to shoot. Its all experimental, and no one photo will be the same as the one before it.Equipment
I shot this with a canon 5d Markii and a 50mm 1.4mm. No tripods, no flash.Inspiration
I am constantly inspired by the creative talent on pintrest. I adore lowlight photography, from fashion to cityscapes. I see techniques and want to try them out for myself. That's the great thing about photography, you are always learning new techniques and styles.Editing
Yes. I use adobe Lightroom to adjust the usual highlights, shadows, white balance and contrast. I than use selective areas to adjust colors. Night time photography won't always give the colors you prefer, depending on what light source you have, so its fun to adjust the colors to set the mood. In this image, the grass was fairly dead already, so I enhanced the red, and pulled on a lot of teals to complement the red.In my camera bag
I only ever take my Canon 5d Markii, 1 canon 50mm 1.2 and sometimes a 100mm as well. No lights, no tripods.Feedback
Research. I enjoy learning about different techniques capturing low light images. Make the shoot an adventure, and be willing to change up your original plan if something put you off path. Post processing also plays a huge roll in these styles of shoots. Play with color and adding more of a light source to change the mood and tone. Most of all, have fun with your model, or friend. Don't just go for a shoot, go for an adventure, try the food, go on a ride, take a walk that 5 meters further off the boundary. You never know what you will find!
