This photo of my two granddaughters was taken in July 2019 at an annual 4th of July family picnic. Sadly, my mother-in-law passed away from pancreatic cancer just shortly thereafter, but that day she was able to enjoy her family and these two crazy girls!Time
The girls were just getting ready to go swimming when I caught this pose. It was around 5 p.m. and they'd just decided to go in for a swim before supper.Lighting
My granddaughters were underneath a patio, so it was well shaded. As I recall, it was an overcast day, so the light was pretty diffuse and even, and the shot was taken without flash.Equipment
I took the shot hand-held with my Canon 80D, with my EF-S 55-250 zoom set at 55mm focal length. Camera settings were ISO500, f/4, 1/400s.Inspiration
As I mentioned before, everyone was feeling the heaviness of my mother-in-law's cancer condition, and we knew she didn't have long to live. This was her favorite holiday to have her entire family there to celebrate, and so I shot this picture to remember the good times we had that day.Editing
I did some color correction and cropping in Luminar. I also blurred and removed some of the background, which was a little distracting. In my camera bag
I typically carry my Canon 80D with my five lenses (Tokina atx-i 100mm f/2.8 macro; Canon 50mm f/1.8, 10-18mm wide angle zoom, 18-55mm zoom, and 55-250mm zoom). I also have my Haida M10 pro filter holder with a 10-stop ND and 3-stop GND filter. I also carry a Godox V850II flash with a MagSphere and MagBeam for portrait work. Of course, I always have my standard accessories like spare batteries, lens hoods, memory cards, etc.Feedback
Always be on the lookout for contrasting opportunities. Everyone was so sad that day, but amongst all of that, my two granddaughters managed to keep it light, and remind us that it's okay to be happy in sad situations. So look for those contrasts in situations like this, and try to capture them.
