Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Time

This photo was taken at night, between 7:00 and 10:00pm.

Lighting

Rice Stadium has excellent lighting for night football games. I did have to set my ISO at 800 and my shutter speed was 1/250. My aperture was wide open at 2.8.

Equipment

I was shooting with a Canon EOS-1D Mark II N. Because I was covering the football game being played, I had my Canon 300mm f 2.8 lens. I was also using a monopod.

Inspiration

The game was being played at the end of October, near Halloween. Many of the spectators in the stands were in costume. During halftime and breaks in action on the field, I turned my camera to the stands to pick up several of the fans who were in costume.

Editing

Yes, I cropped the photo, sharpened it, increased the vibrance and added some vignetting.

In my camera bag

I usually have a 1.4 extender which I use during day games. I also sometimes carry a smaller lens as taking photos when the action is close to you is difficult with a 300mm lens.

Feedback

When you are photographing an event, it is always best to turn around and see what is happening with the spectators. Some of my favorite photos have come from taking photos of the people in the stands.
