Location
The photo was taken at Victoria Bay, South Africa. A popular holiday destination and a very popular surfing spot along the Garden Route Coast.Time
This photo was taken within the first 30 minutes after sunrise.Lighting
This would be a classic example of back lighting. The normal vantage point for photographers at Victoria Bay is from the jetty, providing a high vantage point. However, in order to utilize the marvelous warm light of sunrise while adding a bit of drama, I had to do some rock-hopping on the shore in order to find the correct angle low enough and at the correct alignment between the sun and the breaking waves. It meant my feet got a bit wet now and then but the results were more than worth it.Equipment
For this image I used my Nikon D800E with the Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 without support.Inspiration
I love the action of the surfers, especially because one can share there emotions through their body language. Watching them closely, one can almost experience the thrill of surfing. Using a unique angle and dramatic lighting also helped to elevate the image from the run of the mill surfing images.Editing
I processed this in Adobe Lightroom CC Classic. Basic conservative adjustments to sharpness, contrast and saturation were done. The dark shadows of the background and the figure were enhanced with levels while the yellow and Orange saturation was bumped up a little bit for the effect on the spray. In my camera bag
Nikon D800E, the Nikkor trinity zoom: 14-24mm, 24-70mm and the 70 -200mm, as well as the Nikkor 200-500mm and the 85mm f1.8Feedback
