Trying to get my head around the technique you've used here. Did you pan left-to-right or right-to-left with the wave?

Location
This photo was taken before sunrise at Victoria Bay, South Africa. It coincided with Spring Tide with great swells, providing spectacular waves while a strong seaward wind helped providing white crests.Time
Taken just before sunrise with the beautiful glow reflecting in the waterLighting
Although the light was low, I lowered my ISO to 50 ISO and increased the aperture to f22 in order to get a slow shutterspeed of less than 1/2 sec. This allowed me to pan, enhancing the flowing motion of the waterEquipment
Used a Nikon D800E, Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 at 200mm and f5.6, 1/2 sec. The camera was handheld, I chose a vantage point as low as possible to enhance the size of the waves.Inspiration
Water fascinates me, especially the flowing motion and the endless variation one can get from different angles, apertures, speed and technique. Just acquired the Nikkor 200-500 and tried it for panning/holding focus and to see what creative possibilities it can provide - really thrilled with this lens!Editing
I do all of my editing in Lightroom CC - this photo was cropped very lightly to level the horizon, slight adjustments in white balance, clarity, saturation and basic processing in levels. In my camera bag
My equipment depends on my objective for a shoot and often my mood. I do love the Nikkor 14-24 which is always in my bag for nature shoots. I often used the change that with either the 105mm Micro or the 70-200mm or the 200-500mm - these lenses bring a fresh perspective while working - forcing me to think, change my angles etc. I like to "work a scene" and also to return for different lighting situations and to try new ideas, perspectives and compositions.Feedback
Water is a great subject in its many forms and locations. It is also something that binds all humans - a common factor. Don't be afraid to experiment - there is no right or wrong way to approach it, just many different ways with so many wonderful opportunities. Like the water - let your imagination flow!
