Location
At a wilderness camp in the southern Kananaskis region of Alberta Canada.Time
Early in the morning shortly after sunrise.Lighting
The light was warm and coming through the Jack Pine.Equipment
I normally shoot with a Nikon D800E. I carry a variety of lenses around with me but I usually have the Nikkor 28-300mm zoom on the camera. I often make use of a tripod but in this case, the camera was handheld.Inspiration
I like horses and they have been a big part of our family's life. I knew what to expect for lighting on this morning and hoped to get some of the animals back lit by the sun with steam from body head and breath becoming part of the composition.Editing
Very little post was done on this image. Most of what I did was sharpen the image using the "Smart Sharpen" took in photoshop. In my camera bag
Nikon D800E, Olympus T-4 Tough, Nikkor 28-300mm Zoom, Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 prime, SIGMA 150-600 Sport Zoom. Manfrotto Tripod usually equipped with a Benro Ball Head, a variety of filters. I keep a remote release handy and a cell phone with APS on it that help me make decisions about a variety of things.Feedback
I try to plan my shots as much as possible, I find that I waste less time that way however there is a certain level of serendipity to getting good photographs so you need to be ready for the unexpected. Light can be fleeting especially in the early and late part of the day. Try to have your camera set up for the coming shoot before you get there as this will get you shooting earlier rather than later. Check your camera settings frequently making sure they match the situation.
