This was mid afternoonLighting
It was actually an overcast day with sporadic heavy rain so we were sitting under a gazebo. Light was only the natural ambient light. I had her sit on a table near the edge of the gazebo so I could get the maximum amount of ambient light from that direction and then the deep shadows were from the middle of the gazebo where the ambient was minimal.Equipment

Look for soft ambient light that is directional so you can place your subject in a way that provides the contrast of Light and Shadow.
