Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in a city park during a BBQ / Picnic.

Time

This was mid afternoon

Lighting

It was actually an overcast day with sporadic heavy rain so we were sitting under a gazebo. Light was only the natural ambient light. I had her sit on a table near the edge of the gazebo so I could get the maximum amount of ambient light from that direction and then the deep shadows were from the middle of the gazebo where the ambient was minimal.

Equipment

- NIKON D750 - Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG HSM Art Aperture f/1.4 ISO 400 Shutter 1/1250 Focal Length 850/10

Inspiration

We were just waiting for the rain to stop to go find other locations to shoot.

Editing

Post Processing in Photoshop. Minor Retouching with Frequency Separation, Converted to Black and White with adjustment layer, Highlights and shadows adjusted, and Matte look created with Curves adjustment layer.

In my camera bag

- Nikon D810 - Nikon D750 - Sigma 85mm Art - Sigma 135mm Art - Nikon 50mm 1.4 - Irix 15mm Firefly

Feedback

Look for soft ambient light that is directional so you can place your subject in a way that provides the contrast of Light and Shadow.
