Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a photo safari in Samburu Game Preserve in Kenya, Africa.

Time

It was later in the afternoon and the sun was perfect. We were in the jeep and I was able to prop my camera with a 150x900mm lens on the rood to get a steady shot. The hawk was roughly 1/2 mile away and I zoomed out as far as I could to get this lovely photo.

Lighting

The sun was in a perfect position to capture the natural light of the late afternoon.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7200 camera and a Nikon 150x600mm telephoto zoom lens.

Inspiration

I saw the hawk sitting on a broken limb of a tall tree about 1/2 mile away. When I looked through the lens, it looked straight at me affording this wonderful opportunity.

Editing

I didn't do much processing. The photo itself was pretty good technically and I just lightened it up a bit.I had

In my camera bag

I had to travel pretty light while on the photo safari and only had the one camera, Nikon D7200, and two lenses, a Nikon 150x900mm telephoto zoom and a Tamron 16-300mm telephoto zoom. Plus a tripod.

Feedback

While on a photo safari, always keep looking around, not just down the path. Most of the animals I photographed were well off to the side and partially hidden. Also, a long telephoto lens is a MUST!
