This photo was taken at the Whale Pier in Umhlanga during a week trip down there, this was the only morning that it wasn't raining, so I took full advantage of the sunrise.Time
During my week trip down at Umhlanga, I woke up every morning at 4:30AM packed my bags and sat and waited on the porch for roughly 5AM to see whether or not the rain would come or clear. This was the morning that it wasn't just clouds everywhere so before 5AM I was already en route to the PierLighting
It is very seldom that the sun is in the middle of the pier, apparently only once a year maybe according to the locals, it would have been amazing if the sun was centred but due to the difficulties that week, one had to make do with what there was and this for me was perfect, enough clouds to have interest but not to many to make it boring, amazing colours in the sky.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk iii, Canon 16-35 f/2.8 Mk ii, Manfrotto 055XPRO Aluminium tripod, Manfrotto 405 geared head, LEE filters ND grad filter.Inspiration
One of the most iconic places down in Umhlanga, it is between the lighthouse and this pier, I decided that for the day the skies were open I wanted to be on the pier.Editing
I decided to work on this image as parts, part 1) the sky, part 2) the pier and part 3) the ocean. From doing colour and exposure adjustments to giving a bit more focus with processing lighting techniques to help lead the eye down the middle of the frame to the sunrise. In my camera bag
My backpack bag usually has a Canon 5D Mk iii, 16-35 f/2.8 L Mk ii, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM Mk ii, remote trigger for the camera, two speedlights and a remote trigger for the speedlights. This is my general packing of my bag for most things that I shoot. This is in a LowerPro 450 backpack, I also have a case if I need to carry more as well as little pouches for my LEE Filters when I take them along.Feedback
Perseverance is key, do not expect to get everything on the first try, it is ok to have to go back. Things do not always go as planned and as long as you learn something along the way then it was never a wasted moment even if you didn't get the picture that you wanted.
