While on vacation for a week down in Umhlanga, had been struggling every morning with poor weather conditions, then finally came a morning where one could get out and take some seascape photos, so headed down to the pier before the sun came up and started taking some photos trying to capture on top of the pier and then running down to the beach to get a shot from the beach as well

The photo was taken at the Whale Pier in Umhlanga, Kwa-Zulu NatalTime
It was on a week long vacation down in Umhlanga of waking up at 4:00am every day to bad weather, that I finally woke up to weather that was going to work, the shot was taken at sunrise 5:26amLighting
All the lighting is natural light, I moved around the pier to get a great view point where I could get the sun in the middle of the frame with the pier leading towards the sun. I just loved as well how the light from the sunrise bounced off the water leaving a streak on the pier itselfEquipment
Shot with a Canon 5D Mk iii, 16-35mm f/2.8 IS Mk II, Lee Filter with a 0.6 ND Grad and a Big Stopper.Inspiration
Having gone down on vacation to Umhlanga, the pier is one of the most recognised landmarks there. And fighting the weather the whole week it was a make it or break it morning, so there was a rush to the pier to get different angles and see how everything fell together. This was finally the end result.Editing
The ND filters helped do most of the work. So post mainly comprised of clean up on the beach as there were some bottle caps and other pieces that needed to be removed. There was some exposure adjustments made in Lightroom on the RAW file first, before taking it into Photoshop for the cleanup and a curves layer, as I believe in working the basic adjustments on the RAW first then doing other work on a photo. In my camera bag
This usually varies a bit on where I am going and why I am going. But the one lens that always goes everywhere is the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS Mk ii, along with my 5D Mk iii, other lenses I take depending on scenario are the 16-35mm for landscape or any architecture related photography and a 24-105 for portraits. I often take my 100mm macro lens for headshots as it looks less intimidating than a 70-200 on a tripod :DFeedback
Time and patience, unless you are lucky, there is a good chance that things don't go according to plan, I had the week set out of how I was going to travel around and take photos around the region but ended up only having one clear morning and made a judgement call on where to go. If things don't go the way you expect, then remember to enjoy the time. For landscape I really find the LEE filters (other brands will work as well) quite valuable, I have shot at high noon with a 5 minute exposure without blowing anything out, using a variety of filters. It really does help with creativity but most importantly is play, don't forget to experiment.
