Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at LAvish Studios in Down Town LA in their lighttube stage

Time

We did an evening shoot, something spur of the moment after I had completed another shoot

Lighting

The challenge of this shoot was balancing the backlight and the glowing glasses versus some kind of key light to show the subject. Quite a learning experience

Equipment

I believe it was shot on a Sony a7III, all hand held. Strobe with an octabox most likely.

Inspiration

The model is my friend that owns the business selling the glasses, being a fellow artist, she was up for shooting something abnormal as material. So we experimented with this particular studio. This was one of quite a few successful shots from this set.

Editing

Oh yes. I love pushing and pulling everything in post. My post process is mostly about emphasizing what’s on camera. It’s rare I invent things. Shots like this it’s all about getting as correct in camera as possible so I can work the post as an effect, not a “fix” to the image.

In my camera bag

Outside of the expected things, I almost always have a few different gels and modifiers to try and shake up simple setups, letting it be simple with odd mods to push it further

Feedback

Experiment. Each situation is different and you have to be willing to fail and lost a few shots to get something outstanding. The losses are worth it. The true benefit of digital imagery.
