This was one of my camp sites along 395 recently. The flowers were blooming, the grass was green and the butterflies were EVERYWHERE! I had seen the swarms of them in San Diego about 6 weeks ago and had no idea I’d run into them (both figuratively and literally) on my next photo trip. It was such a cool experience to see them going from plant to plant in a natural environment as opposed to urbanized gardens. Unfortunately, many of them fly low across the highway. My front bumper looked like a war zone and you could see them on the windshields of the semi trucks and other cars traveling opposite on the road. This was one of the last photos I took before I called it a night and climbed into my tent. When setting up my camp I honestly didn’t even mean to line up the tent under the path of the Milky Way. It was simply the best spot since the volcanic rocks behind it provided some shelter from the wind. The tent was staked firmly so moving it just for a photo wasn’t worth it. The inside was illuminated from my battery powered lantern on its lowest setting. Even on the lowest setting that light source attracted so many insects! The tent was like a fly catcher! Can’t wait to go back.
