Behind The Lens

Location

I began a hike following the High Trail in the Cinque Terra, Italy-starting from Riomaggiore and continuing the ever climbing trail through to Monterosso which took about 5 hours. I was stopping to shoot the beauty along the way. The 4th town is Vernazza and this image was taken from the highest point of the trail.

Time

I reached this point on the trail around 2 in the afternoon. Others hiking the trail were now coming up to this narrow spot from both directions making navigating the trail a bit difficult. I stood on a cliff ledge holding a tree branch to steady my balance, took aim and hoped for the best! I still feel this is one of my best images.

Lighting

The day was warm, bright and sunny. No other lighting was necessary as the image I was looking at was perfect

Equipment

The image was shot with a Canon 60D, a Tamron 28-75 mm lens. I did manage to get a few other shots of the scene with a 10-24 mm Tamron lens but this image was easily my favorite.

Inspiration

After walking through the streets of Vernazza the day before I fell in love with all the elements: the seaside, colorful shops and simply the way the town was shaped. Shooting it in its entirety from an above vantage point was a no brainer. The climb to the perch was an adventure in itself.

Editing

Other than a bit of color pop the image is presented as it was shot.

In my camera bag

Other than the aforementioned pieces I carry a Canon T3i body with a 28-300mm Tamron lens, spare SD cards, spare batteries for both camera bodies, a neutral density filter, a gorilla pod and "raincoats" for the cameras and lenses.

Feedback

Composing landscape photography takes patience, the right time of day for any particular moods one is seeking, and time to scout out the terrain. Take several shots with different composite looks, different lenses if possible.
