Location
Taken at a private barn near Abbotsford, BC, Canada. At the time, this facility hosted New Strides Thoroughbred Adoption Society, a rescue devoted solely to the rehabilitation & rehoming of OTTB's; Off the Track Thoroughbred ex-race horses.Time
I like to follow the horses out in the morning, as they are being let out onto their pastures for the day. This is the time they're usually most animated!Lighting
This particular day sported a high, light overcast, which produced lovely, soft lighting. My favourite kind!Equipment
Shot with a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 70-200 VR. Handheld at 1/500, 2.8, one-third stop underexposedInspiration
"Laser Tech", a Thoroughbred ex-racehorse & his buddy "Bella" shared a similar history, both as rescues. Tech was brought into the rescue after a re-homing gone horribly wrong; he was 250 lbs underweight, & had been neglected severely. I brought him in that morning, and while we gathered around his stall discussing what he would need, one of the volunteers came into the barn carrying a bundled up towel containing Bella. The volunteer worked at a local restaurant & discovered a garbage bag in the dumpster behind the place; it contained the bodies of Bella's mother & siblings ... Bella was the only one to survive. We quickly made a bed in the feed room for her, then returned to check on Tech. As we stood there, Bella suddenly appeared, and teetered weakly into Tech's stall, where she promptly curled up next to him. Subsequent months found the two utterly inseparable; each morning when Tech was turned out, Bella would follow & spend the entire day with him. At night, she would join him in his stall, often curling up on his back when he laid down. We joked about what would happen if Tech was adopted out, that whomever took him would have to take a cat as well! The day finally arrived when Tech found his forever home, which i delivered him to. On the way back, i picked up another horse, Jedi, who was to go into Tech's old stall. I wondered about Bella as i led Jedi into the barn. With no fuss whatsoever, Bella simply joined Jedi, and welcomed him to the herd. I consider this the legacy of survivors ...Editing
Just cropping, colour corrections & levels. I liked the raw realism of the original shot & didn't want to make it look contrived. In my camera bag
I'm that crazy old guy with the old camera store down the street; there's a little bit of everything there! I never know what i'm going to encounter, so i tend to pack everything but the kitchen sinkFeedback
This was taken knowing the first turnout in the morning would invariably give me something memorable, so the lesson is, know your subject, but be ready for the unexpected. It's taken me 50 years around horses to predict what's likely to happen, but even at that, these two completely surprised me. Look around, don't get zoned, and when you get the chance, just take the shot!
