Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on a location in the province of North Holland.

Time

This was during sunrise so it meant getting up before dawn driving for an hour and a half trying to find the right spot (this was my first and only time there) And setting up my gear just in time for the sunrise.

Lighting

When I noticed that the sun was about to rise behind the Windmill I positioned myself so that the sun would 'touch' the windmill. Because of the contrast between the shadow of the windmill and the highlights of the sun I bracketed my shots and merged them later in Lightroom into an HDR-shot.

Equipment

I used my old and trusty Nikon D7100 and a Sigma 70-300 lense for the shot. To keep it ready I used my tripod and a 2 second timer to not make the setup vibrate.

Inspiration

I had been looking for ages to find a spot in The Netherlands where there are tulips and a windmill. Finally I found a place somewhere in the North of Holland. Then one day When the tulip season was there I had one chance to head out north and took it.

Editing

I merged my bracketed shots in Lightroom to get an even balanced image. I was happy that the tulips matched the sky in color and tried to bring them even closer to each other.

In my camera bag

I always bring my Nikon D7100, Tamron 17-50, Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 70-300 to this kind of locations.

Feedback

Find a good location, wait for the right conditions (in this case spring, morning, sunrise, weather) and just go for it! Getting out of bed was the hardest part of this image.. the rest was superfun!
