Behind The Lens

Location

I was on my way to a birthday party. Keeping my eye on the sky. I had anticipated that the sunset might become interesting that evening and on my way there would be some locations I had never been before. After driving only 10 minutes the sunset was allready about to go into overdrive so I parked the car and saw that the party had allready begun!

Time

It was in the evening around sunset when I parked my car and franticly took out my camera gear. The sky was turning into all sorts of colors changing with the blink of an eye and I knew I had to be quick if I was going to capture some of it.

Lighting

This was one of the best looking skies I had ever seen, the combination of high, but small clouds and the pending sunset made my heart beat faster. I had hoped to capture a nice sunstar when the sun was hitting the horizon but a bank of clouds prevented that. After the sun actually had set the colors intensified and created all variations of yellow, orange and red. I was looking for a good subject to do justice to all this when I noticed a couple of headlights approaching in the distance. I instantly recognized that that would make for a great shot; an amazing sunset with cars rushing by not seeing the beauty. In this image I love how the orange of the car lights matches with the oranges in the sky. I think that is one of the reasons why this image works for me.

Equipment

I took out my old trusty Nikon D90, set up my tripod got my wide angle 10-20 mm Sigma and put on a Hitech 0.6 hard grad filter to balance the exposure of the sky with the foreground.

Inspiration

I was looking for a place that had a nice row of trees and a road that was leading more or less towards the sunset. Because the sunset was already well on its way I decided that this was the right spot. I was getting great images but none of them had that kind of wow-feeling. I thought it might be a more interesting shot if I used the car lights. So I waited for some cars to pass by. And that gave that extra little bit of punch to the image.

Editing

I always process my landscape images some more that others. I usually start with raw fine tuning, making minor corrections in exposure, color balance, contrast and details, fixing the lense corrections and such, then I used On1 Perfect Effects to bring out some more details in the shot (i absolutely love the Dynamic Contrast filter there) After I was done I used Photoshop to enhance the light trails that are going out of frame in the bottom right some more. gave them more contrast and I made them a little longer.

In my camera bag

I try to travel as light as possible when I can but usually end top bringing almost everything. My go to lense is the Tamron 17-50 2.8, it is practically always on my D90. It is tack sharp and I love to have 2.8 aperture at my disposal. The next is the complimentary Tokina 11-16 2.8 ever so sharp and built-like-a-tank. A rock solid performer. Then I still have my Nikon 18-200 allround lense that I rarely use these days. Other stuff I use a lot are my set of Formatt HiTech filters I have both hard and soft graduated filters in 1-2 and 3 stops difference and of course my small but nimble Manfrotto 290 tripod.

Feedback

Check the weather, check the sky, scout for locations in advance and think how your image is going to look. Be at an nice location at the right times of day like sunset or sunrise. Once the light is right start shooting. When you get the shot you came there for, ask yourself; what can I do to make this shot even better? Experiment, look around, look behind you, look everywhere, keep looking and 'seeing' with your minds eye.
