Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a hiking trail just up the hill from my home in Los Angeles, CA.

Time

I am a natural light shooter, so I took this approximately an hour from sunset when the light was soft, balanced and warm.

Lighting

I am a natural light shooter, so the soft, warm light at the end of the day was wonderful to work with. My subject and the trees in the background glowed when I shot with the sun behind her.

Equipment

I use a Canon 5DSr and shot this with my 85mm 1.2 lens. I don't use flash, reflectors, or tripods. I have a very minimal set up and simply work to keep my shutter speed at 1/125 or higher.

Inspiration

I was inspired by this dress, which looked like a rose in bloom. I wanted to explore that idea, thinking about what it would look like if she were truly wearing a rose and leaving petals in her wake as she walked down the trail.

Editing

Yes, post-processing is a big part of my artwork. I definitely like to get a good shot in camera, but then I take the imagery further with the help of photoshop. In this case, I adjusted the color tones and added more rose petals to my scene.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5DSR, Canon 85mm 1.2, Canon 70-200 2.8, and Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 lenses.

Feedback

To get the warm glow without harsh shadows, shoot about an hour before sunset, when the light is soft. Use a lens that allows you to shoot pretty wide open, for a softness in the background. Position your subject between you and the sun to get a nice, backlit glow. My color tones and rose petal overlays are available for purchase at jessicadrossin.com/store.
