Location
I took this photo in Los Angeles, CA oin an open area along a hiking trail.Time
I like to shoot during the golden hour, about an hour before sunset. I love how shooting during this time of day allows me to capture warm the highlights and soft shadows. You can tell the light is soft, which allows everything to feel relaxed and dreamy, including my model's expression. Shooting this time of day prevents the eyes from squinting.Lighting
I shot this using only natural/available light. I did not use reflectors or flash of any sort. That is why shooting at this time of day, when the light is balanced and soft, is so critical. My subject is backlit.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5DS R (Aperture f/2, ISO 1000, Shutter 1/160) and my Canon 85mm 1.2 lens. This was a hand held shot and no lighting equipment was used.Inspiration
I was inspired by this dress I found. I thought it looked like a blooming rose. I wanted to explore that idea by introducing actual rose petal elements. I felt it would be interesting to have her scattering rose petals in the wind in almost an "He loves me, he loves me not" kind of passive way. I wanted a to create a dreamy effect to sort of play with the name I'd chosen in my head "Pieces of Me". I liked the idea that her dress, and maybe even she herself, was coming apart and blowing in the wind towards the viewer.Editing
Yes, I post process. I like to reinforce and expand upon what I get in-camera by pushing the colors to create a deeper overall mood. I wanted a painterly, dreamy feel so I added more rose petals and replaced the sky. I was only able to truly realize my final vision in the editing process because I wanted to depart from reality and create my own world. In my camera bag
My Canon 5DSR, Canon 85mm 1.2, Tamron 24-70mm 2.8, and Canon 70-200mm 2.8.Feedback
I recommend shooting about an hour before sunset, shooting with the sun behind the subject. I would also then recommend playing in photoshop if your vision is to add more of a storytelling, surreal element. I added rose petals, clouds and played with the tones to unify them. I sell the rose petals overlays, clouds and actions if you want to check them out in my store (www.jessicadrossin.com/store)
