I lived in Barstow, Ca 50 years ago and loved it. It even snowed one year and covered the trees

We got a few inches of snow a couple of weeks ago! It was awesome but so strange to see the desert landscape dressed in white.

I think the desert will bloom this March, grab that camera and fire away.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the high desert of California in Yucca Valley. I really wanted to get a photo of a Joshua Tree for Spring. I live in Joshua Tree but, surprisingly, I have found large, beautiful Joshua trees in the next town over called Yucca Valley.

Time

I took a drive from Joshua Tree to Yucca Valley in the early afternoon. I remember wanting to capture something unique for a Spring photo and chose a Joshua Tree as my subject. The light was wonderful so I chose this time of day for my shot.

Lighting

Light in the high desert is interesting. It changes quickly and noticeably by bringing out different features of the mountains, landscape (desertscape?), trees, flowers. It's fascinating. A boring, flat, featureless subject can suddenly become an extraordinary sight to behold in just a few minutes or an hour if you are willing to take the time to just watch.

Equipment

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S9 at the moment. All of my current photos are taken with my smartphone. It's opened up new challenges for me and I'm enjoying the process. Minimal editing is done.

Inspiration

Spring in the high desert inspired me. I wanted something unique to show what Spring in my part of the world is like.

Editing

Very minimal editing. Adjusted the vibrance and shadows but that's about it.

In my camera bag

My eyes, my imagination, my smartphone.

Feedback

Look around, think about what makes the area you are in unique.
