Just as a picture taken off a wall leaves a mark behind so, too, do people by their absence. When they stepped out of the open door they left behind what they once were. Did they sleep easily in that made bed, or walk a mile in those shoes? Did they sit comfortably and contemplate tales beside fireplaces, now filled with the fallen remnants of decay? Did they dream and await the caller at the gate?
Each possession abandoned in these derelict buildings speaks of the passage of us – a page turned at the corner as a bookmark, sheets left on the bed ready for sleeping in, cushions plumped on the chair waiting to be sat upon, shoes left by the bedside ready to wear – all of these belongings leave a residual feeling in the atmosphere almost like a memory – an essence of presence left behind by the presence of absence.

Location
This photo was taken in a house that had been abandoned for ten years and had just been bought with a view to refurbishing it.Time
It was mid morning and the sun was strong so I closed the curtains to get a more atmospheric image.Lighting
For this photo the light was too harsh so I closed the curtains and about thirty dead wasps fell out of them - gave me a bit of a fright. Once I got over that I chose a ISO 100, f11 and a long shutter speed in order to get a balance between the highlights and the shadows.Equipment
I use a Nikon D750 and shot with a wide angle lens at 14mm. I use a tripod and long exposure. I don't use flash very often.Inspiration
The room was left in this condition, untouched and unchanged for ten years. I find that amazing.Editing
Yes, but not a lot. In camera Raw I balance my highlights and shadows, straighten and/crop if necessary and adjust the overall exposure and contrast. In my camera bag
Nikon D750, Nikkor AF-S 14-35mm f4; Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm f4; Nikkor 50mm f1.4. I do carry a flash but use it so rarely I don't even know what make it is.Feedback
Take your time, shoot in Raw format; use a tripod; low ISO and expose for the highlights. Shadows can be brought up a bit in Camera Raw afterwards.
