Location
Bury Hill Ring, nr Andover, Hampshire, UK. Bury Hill Ring is an Iron Age Fort. Largely overgrown, but you can still make out the defensive ramparts.Time
The photograph was taken during the afternoon in February.Lighting
I wanted to use natural light. The leaves weren't yet on the trees and so it was quite easy to get plenty of sunlight onto her face. Although the sunlight was quite harsh at first as it was February it soon began to soften later in the shoot.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D MkIII and a Canon 24-105mm L lens. Aperture f/4?ISO 500?Shutter 1/320?Focal Length 70/1Inspiration
The subject is my great-niece. My niece had asked for some portrait pictures of her and originally wanted to have studio style shots indoors but I suggested we went to the Ring for the shoot on a good afternoon. I walk round Bury Hill Ring almost every day and I wanted a natural feel to the pictures.Editing
It has been through Lightroom with a pre-set 'Autumn Vibes' added to it. Then small adjustments to clarity, exposure etc.In my camera bag
Canon 24-105mm L, Canon 17-40mm L, Tamron 70-300mm lenses. Canon 5D MkIII body. Canon 500D body for spare.Feedback
Take lots of pictures, look at other photographer's work. Be critical of your own work but also congratulate yourself when something goes well. Use wide aperture settings and fast shutter speeds to achieve the sharpness of your subject to contrast with the blurred backgrounds.
