I was caught by the wistful look on this young Japanese woman's face. We were in Kyoto, the old capital of Japan of the Edo period, where there remains a high awareness in tradition and heritage. I glimpsed this modern young woman dressed up - as is common on weekends or holidays - in a kimono. In her face I saw the struggle of someone trying to find themselves. Of trying to know who they are. Where they fit in. Of trying to reconcile the inescapable difficulties of growing beyond childhood into a world of adults. The world of then; the world of now.
