Finding a Break - Trevose Head, Cornwall_DSC7765.jpg - Friday September 29 2017

I was visiting this area of the north Cornish Atlantic coastline (UK) with the aim of photographing the historic mid-19th Century Trevose Head lighthouse. It was part of a long weekend 'escape' shooting the outdoors, as a change from people on London's urban streets. The location is rugged, exposed, can be difficult and hard-going on foot at this point, and I couldn't find a view of the still active lighthouse that appealed to me, in the blustery, poor late-afternoon light, and uneven ground conditions. Disappointed - I took a few shots anyway - I attempted to work my way back to the relative calm of the car park, all the while looking westwards to the horizon and distant East-coast USA for a break in the weather, but the skies seemed constantly grey and rain was intermittently in the air. It was a continuing fight to stay upright, picking a path in the gusting winds, which were the tail end of the hurricanes that had recently and devastatingly swept the Caribbean. Even after travelling thousands of miles across the open Atlantic Ocean the winds packed a sting in their tails and I was cautious about getting anywhere too close to the cliffs' edge.
Quite suddenly, out over the foaming seas, a break appeared in the swirling multi-layered clouds. Blue sky was glimpsed. Watery but powerful sunlight poured out, piercing the gloom, lighting a path across the sea and headland for less than a minute before disappearing into murky monochrome again. Not to return that day.
During the break in the clouds I steadied myself and fired off a number of handheld shots, from different positions, vertical and horizontal. This is one of those shots.
