These names are getting a little out of hand, but here’s the final composite showing the path the moon took in the night sky on January 20th. I was able to view about 75% of the eclipse until the clouds rolled in during the end of the prenumbral eclipse. This was the last spot on my list of potential locations due to cloud coverage. There were four other locations I had planned, but then we got hit with back to back rainstorms in Southern California and I knew clouds would be an issue. I spent the week before checking every weather app and site I could just to find a spot that had a potential to view this event. It was extremely cold and windy which made shooting this a challenge. When I got back to my tent the next morning it had completely collapsed and would have blown away, had my neighbor placed a bunch of rocks on it. The tent was staked down on all four sides, too. In the end, it almost worked out perfect. In the photography world that is pretty rare so I’ll take it.

Two bodies were used: @NikonUsa D750 and Nikon D5200. A wide angle was used to track the moon and get the foreground. Then a longer lens was used to zoom in to take more detailed shots of the moon in order to overlay them on the shots from the wide angle. Long exposures were taken before totality to get the bright foreground. There is a lot of cropping and masking in achieving this end result. Worked on this for a few evenings. Using a Wacom tablet really helps the editing become more streamlined.
