Location
As a pet nanny, I spend quite a bit of time photographing cats. This was taken at a client's home in Phoenix, Arizona.Time
I believe this was taken during one of my evening visits - probably some time around 5:30 pm.Lighting
I used the ambient light from the sliding glass door in my client's family room. It comes in at an angle, but is indirect, not shining directly on the subject.Equipment
I used my Sony DSLR with its regular 18-55 mm lens.Inspiration
I'm always looking for great shots that show the character and personality of the pets I'm working with (I make calendars for my clients at holiday time) and Shed is a beautiful example with her stunning blue eyes and tendency to hang close to her brother for support.Editing
I did do some minor post-processing, but like a homestyle cook who adds "bits of this and a drizzle of that", I don't remember exactly what I did. I move Lightroom sliders around until I like the result. I did take my moderate crop to a tight crop to bring attention to her beautiful blue eyes.In my camera bag
I don't carry much equipment with me most of the time. I don't have much to carry. Just my camera with its standard lens, a telescoping tabletop tripod, a remote timer unit, and a small pack of cards with tips on taking various types of photos, which I never look at - Haha! I may have read them once...Feedback
One of the keys to pet photography is garnering trust in my subjects. Shed was relaxed when I took this, having just gotten done with a good play session. I use a lot of weird noises to get the attention of my subjects because I work alone, but an assistant would be helpful for making light adjustments and keeping pets in place and looking in the right direction. I don't have that luxury.
