Behind The Lens

Location

This is Flapjack. He was a shelter cat from Arizona Animal Welfare League, where I volunteered at the time I shot the photo of him. I really wanted to capture his sweet nature in a photo to help him stand out and get adopted. It was taken while he was in his kennel waiting for that special someone to come along.

Time

This photo was taken around midday, if I remember correctly, but that is actually pretty irrelevant, since it was taken indoors.

Lighting

I really don't have any specific insights about lighting. I just relied on the lighting inside the pet store section where the rescued kitties were being housed. There was no special lighting.

Equipment

Unfortunately, I don't have any camera equipment (yet). The photo was taken on a Samsung Galaxy S4 on its standard photo settings with no flash.

Inspiration

I wanted to do my best to highlight Flapjack's sweetness to help attract potential adopters to his profile and help him get adopted. I feel the relaxed and trusting pose helps to do that. Anyone who knows how to read cat body language should be able to interpret it in a way that attracts them to take a closer look at Flapjack.

Editing

All I did in post-processing was crop the shot for better composition.

In my camera bag

Equipment? Bag? I wish! I'm still operating with a Samsung phone camera, but I've upgraded to the S6 now. I have a Sony DSLR on layaway, but it will be awhile before I actually have it in hand.

Feedback

I'm all about the art of composition. Get in tight to your subject and don't forget the rule of thirds when composing your shot. Sometimes, when you have to shoot fast to get the right expression or perfect angle before it is gone - as was the case with this shot - you may need to finish or touch up the composition in post-processing. Like for this shot, in which I tweaked the crop a little to improve on the composition of the original photo.
