This axis fawn was out exploring on his own (I think it is a young buck because the head seems to have marks where future antlers would grow) and he was bold and curious when he finally saw me. Axis deer are very vocal, making a number of sounds like high-pitched yips and barks. There was another axis back in the brush barking - like a mom barking orders. He responded with a few yips but otherwise ignored instructions and continued to try different plants and look at me until it finally took off. Such a curious and bold nature may not be healthy in the long run but it did make for a nice photographic session. This species is not a native Texas deer, but they have escaped from exotic game ranches over the years and thrive quite well.
