Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio in downtown Toronto, Ontario ( Canada )

Time

This shot was taken during the afternoon..... or maybe morning. I typically shoot in studio during the afternoon and will usually do a set balancing natural light in the studio. My studio work is rarely in the morning...... I need to wake up! Seriously, this shot was mid day, but the lighting was all strobe, so the black-out curtains were drawn.

Lighting

This model had very strong features and her personality was strait to the punch, down to earth. Wild hair and dressed in denim, I wanted to capture her "devil may care" attitude. So, one light ( large 5' gridded octobox ) and reflector. Simple lighting to capture her expression

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 5d MK II with an 24-105mm f/4L lens around 60 mm. 160th of a second, ISO 100 F6.3 Hand held...... I am 6'6" tall and this pose had the model sitting..... I had to get down low.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this shot came from the model, herself. Her personality, her clothing and her expressions seemed to lend it nicely to a nice, high contrast black and white with some classic lighting pattern.

Editing

Post processing was to bring up the shadows a bit ( the original was a bit too shadowy ), bump the contrast and add a bit more back lighting to the scene to help separate the model from the background.... and a final crop.

In my camera bag

I now use my Canon 5d Mk IV, but my go to lens is always the 24-105 F4L. Secondary to that is my standard 70 - 200 F2.8. Third is my 85mm prime. These are the 3 main lenses I use. In studio, my strobes are all Elinchrom ... I have always loved their consistency and speed.

Feedback

If anyone wanted to capture something like this image, the basics are the better. Keep it simple with the lighting ( this was a one light setup ), the posing ( the model is relaxed and showing her personality ) Create depth with your lighting, paying attention to the shadows
