Behind The Lens

This photo was taken in my studio in Cambridge, Ontario Canada
This shot was in the middle of the afternoon, but could have been taken anytime as it was a 4 light setup, shot at settings where ambient light had no effect
This lighting is nothing special. Consideration was to keep it bright and "fun" Hair-light and a 7' silver umbrella camera right to give some edge to the lighting with a 5' softbox for fill and another rectangular softbox camera left to highlight the back of the model
Canon 5d Mk iv triggering Godox 600W strobes. F8 ISO 1001/200 sec exposure with a EF 24-105 F4L IS USM. I think this was handheld so I could get a bit lower to the ground
Retro and pinup are a favorite of mine and lots of people enjoy shooting this genre. I wanted something a bit flirty, hence the lack of clothing! But, a bucket and and inch of water, bubble bath and a hand mixer we got some great bubbles that hang around=d for a long time. I wanted to pay attention to colors in the shot. I was experimenting with analogous colors, colors next to each other on the color wheel.
I did a bit of processing on this shot. Some dodge and burn, highlights on the skin and bring out the texture in the wooden tub. Overall lift light, a slight vignette..... and I think a bit of use of the oil painting stylizing filter on the phone
In my camera bag
I keep an 85mm F1.8 lens for lots of portrait work and low light / natural light shooting. 24-105 for shooting with strobes.. 70-200 f2.8 for either natural light or strobe work. Those are my 3 main lenses I attach to my Canon 5D Mk iv I have a 580EX flash, but rarely use it. My trusty light meter, grey card and that is about it
My advise to pull of a shot like this is: 1. Go into the shoot with an idea of what you want your models expressions to be. Pinup and retro I find you need a model to go "over-the-top" with posing and expressions to bring life and fun energy to the image 2. Pay attention to color scheme and combinations 3. Highlight with clear crisp edges, use silver lined modifiers Also, put on some great retro music and have fun!!!
