Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Torrey Pines State Reserve, San Diego, CA - on the beach walk. The beach trail starts the upper parking lot, meanders across to the bluff among chaparral, until the bluff. Ten feet beyond where I stand, it starts to fall through switchbacks to the beach. This image is at the drop of the bluff and provides an overlook of the path to the beach, and the ocean.

Time

My favorite time is near sunset in the summer, when it's been a bit cloudy and overcast. It's usually quite still and an amazing spot to feel the serenity of nature.

Lighting

A beach sunset if a natural picture event, however in this photo I wanted to frame the sunset with the walk and the overlook of the ocean. The dramatic vista is framed by the human scale of the foreground.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D40 with an ED 18-55mm 1:35-5.6 lens and polarizing filter. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Torrey Pines State Reserve is my favorite location for nature photography. The bluffs edge is home to Peregrine and Osprey's. The spring has a riot of wild flowers, and in the winter, the fog from the ocean makes the park a dream sequence. It is every amazing and ever changing - which makes it a joy to capture.

Editing

Minimal post-processing for dust spots, but no color processing.

In my camera bag

Nikon D700, Nikon D40, Canon ES M50 with an assortment of lenses.

Feedback

I've found that being so close to Torrey Pines, and visiting it frequently in the early morning and late afternoons, after the crowds have left, affords me an intimacy its' special spots. For me, walking paths that I know intimately, and the accompanying vistas is what allows me to take memorable photos. Following the weather forecasts is helpful, but the frequency of my visits allows me to understand where and when to shoot my images, and how to prepare the camera. I do not take a bag, but have the camera set for the scene I intent to shoot.
