A spur of the moment shot while walking at extreme low tide. My wife and I are here 2-3 times a week, so we know Torrey Pines Beach intimately. The trick, as always in capturing the moment, with the right light.Time
We're at Torrey Pines often. Because of the crowds, sunrise is usually our moment. However with the extreme low tide, and the perfect light, the colors of the sandstone bluff are spectacular.Lighting
I wanted the shot to highlight the color of the bluff against the clear blue sky, mirrored in the reflection on the receding tide. Just a few people on the beach to give a sense of scale and majesty.Equipment
I wish I had used my iPhone 8, but instead, I only had the iPhone 6s handy.Inspiration
Torrey Pines Beach is endlessly fascinating, ever changing and captivating. Being 3 miles away allows me to explore, and pic the times that feel the most inspiring. Honestly, there's practically no time other than mid-day, that the beach doesn't hold a spell for any nature photographer. For those nearby, the Preserve at the top, and the trails hold an equally endless supply of wonderful compositions.Editing
Not really any processing other than some sharpening, and perhaps a bit of exposureIn my camera bag
Apart from a handy iPhone 8, my wife's iPhone10X, I generally use my Nikon D7000, with AF Nikkor 18-35mm or 1:3.5-4.5D; AFS Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8 or AF Nikkor 24mm 1:2.8 for general, and the AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1:35-5.6D for raptors. Usual collection of UV and polarizing filters for each lens.Feedback
Landscape and architecture photography are my passions. Familiarity with the scene, the timing of the sunset, sunrise, and the weather conditions are critical factors. I'm spoiled in that the stunning landscape is very close. Spending time to know the place, the seasonal changes are most important to me. In this case, I had none of my usual gear, it came as a surprise. For my architectural street photography, looking up, is critical. My work in DTLA allows me the same intimacy for architecture, as living a few miles from Torrey Pines. The iPhone, certainly from the 6s on, have great capabilities. It's also a critical piece of my Be prepared to get wet/stop traffic, and immerse yourself into the scene.
