I took this photo of an eagle at a wildlife refuge in Juneau, Alaska. The eagle was not confined and was free to fly, but this is the home base to which it returned regularly. The title was inspired by the defiant look as it stared ahead, ignoring me, as if to say "I will not be captured and confined!" Among so many other wildlife species, American Bald Eagles like this have hovered on the endangered list over the past several decades as natural habitats decline and effects of global warming take their toll. By the end of this century, as scientific studies warn, climate change may lead to mass extinction of so many species, and photos like this may be the only evidence that such magnificent creatures existed. One of my major goals as a photographer is to help raise awareness of these issues and help inspire people to become actively involved in efforts to halt or reverse climate change, especially now that we have a president who regards this devastating scientific reality as a conspiratorial hoax.
