Behind The Lens

Location

I have taken this photo during an exploration trip at The Fish River Canyon in the southern part of Namibia.

Time

When you are doing wildlife and landscape photography, especially when you are exploring areas you have never visited before, you take the photo when the opportunity arises. This particular photos was taken around midday, the sun was already fairly high.

Lighting

I did not have the luxury to use strobes etc. Here I had to use what the sun provided, no cloud cover, just the harsh sunlight in the desert.

Equipment

I used my trusted Sony workhorse.

Inspiration

The Fish River canyon is well known by hikers, adventurers and a lot has been written about from it as early as the 1700's. Indigenous people whom followed a nomadic lifestyle often lived & hunted in this part of the world. It is known to be the second largest canyon in the world and is approximately 350 million years ago. A photo does not do justice to this canyon. Your senses gets an overload when you stand (park) on the edge. It is the scale, the width, the depth, the colors, the starkness, the heat, the blue sky and the absence of noise that will remain with you for the rest of your life. You realize that this canyon has been gazed upon over millions of years by so many creatures (including homo sapiens) and that I had the privilege to also admire and share it's soul.

Editing

Very little post processing was done, I wanted the photo to reflect what i have seen and experienced. I have also done another version where I have saturated the colors a bit, highlighted the reflections on the Land Rover's dusty doors and increased the contrast, which is more pleasing photo, but it is not what I have seen.

In my camera bag

Sony A73, Sony A77ii, Sigma 70-200 F2.8, Tamron 28-75 F2.8, Sony 18-55mm F2.8, Sigma 1/4 convertor, Sony LA-EA4 adapter.

Feedback

You need to know and understand the basic principles of photography (aperture, shutter speed, exposure and ISO), know how to use your camera gear and don't be afraid to experiment with photography styles. In the end it is your photo and you have to like it and does the photo tell the story or the message you want to convey? Filter the comments from other viewers and use the good critics to learn and improve. Ask questions and read as much as you can about the genres you are interested in. Be different.
