Location
During the severe Covid-19 restrictions we subjected to strict curfews and no photography services. I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with light and improve my skills. I have created a setup with a chair, two speed lights & an off cut from a pvc backdrop in my dining room. I have drawn the curtains, switched of the main light, in order to have just enough ambient light to see in near darkness. I took a dining room chair, covered it with an off cut from a black pvc backdrop, set up my two speed lights with purple filters and started playing.Time
This photo was taken indoor with most natural and ambient light blocked out.Lighting
I used the 1st speed light at a higher output setting to illuminate the black pvc backdrop in such a way to get a bit of texture in the back ground and the second speed light setting was to obtain just enough light on the glass and the flower (without getting too much reflection). I changed filters on both speed lights until I managed to get the colors which I liked the most.Equipment
Equipment used was a tripod, Sony A7iii, Tamron 28-75 mm lens, 2 x Godox T685, white shoot through umbrellas as diffusers and black pvc backdrop.Inspiration
I did a similar shoot many years ago with a glass bottle and led lights, which clients loved as a modern still life wall art. I wanted to create something similar, but with a crisper feel and with more luminescence.Editing
Very basic post processing was done in Light Room. I have cropped the photo and added a little bit of saturation. In my camera bag
Sony A7iii, Sony A77ii, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 28-75 F2.8, Sony 18-55 F2.8, 2 x Godox T685, 1 x Godox XT1 trigger, tripod, lots of AA batteries.Feedback
Use photography rules and light settings as a guide, set your creative mind free, visualize the image and start to experiment. Search Viewbug for inspiration and once you have seen a photo which grabs your attention, try to understand which settings were used to create that photo. Use this information and inspiration to create your own photo. Bend the rules, be brave and vary photography angles (lie on the floor, stand on a counter top etc), play with shutter speeds and apertures to get as many different moods and colors in your photos. You will soon discover which method creates the image in your mind and then take it from there to improve. Photography provides an opportunity to create art, to express feelings, to capture a moment in time, to set yourself free.
