Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken along the boardwalk in Sidney, BC, Canada.

Time

This is probably one of my favourite images I have ever taken. I remember waking up around 5AM and walking along the boardwalk, just waiting for the sun to slowly rise above the horizon. It ended up being one the best sunrises I had ever seen in my life. The sky lit up on fire and subsequently created a beautiful reflection in the still water.

Lighting

The only comment I have about lighting was that I had to make sure that I didn't overexpose the photo. The sunrise was very bright, however I still wanted to capture all of the gorgeous colours in the sky and on the water.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D3400 with a 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I have grown up travelling to Sidney to visit family and always felt perfectly at home in this location. My passion for photography has immensely increased over the last few years and I wanted to finally capture a shot of the sunrise along the boardwalk. This shot ended up being one of my favourite and most personal shots I have ever taken. The photo itself captures a perfect moment in which you are in awe of nature. However, later that very same morning, I found out that my grandma had passed away. It was then that I realized that she was saying goodbye and reuniting with my grandpa.

Editing

I made a few minor adjustments to the contrast and lighting in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

For this specific photo all I had was my Nikon camera and the single lens.

Feedback

My advice for other photographers wanting to capture a similar photo is that it is worth waking up at ungodly hours to take these types of photos.
