Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the classic street of St. Laurent in Montreal's Plateau.

Time

This is probably one of my favourite images. I remember waking up early in the morning after a historic storm in Montreal that closed the city down. The shear amount of snow is almost comical when you walk along the streets, vacant of all people and cars. Personally, I always love taking shots when the weather is crazy, as it brings an element of unpredictability to photos that cannot be seen otherwise.

Lighting

The only thing I would discuss about lighting would be to adjust your exposure when shooting in the snow. Often the camera will overexpose the shots.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D3400.

Inspiration

I was simply walking along the streets of Montreal near my apartment. Montreal is known for its quintessential brick houses, and I find the contrast between the red colour and the snow make for incredible shots. Additionally, I took this particular shot due to the interesting subject. The man in background fit so perfectly with his red parka. I also loved that he was carrying an umbrella in the middle of a blizzard.

Editing

I just made a few contrast adjustments in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I typically just carry my camera and a small camera back. I also always keep a spare battery, as the cold weather conditions often make the camera batteries lose power more rapidly.

Feedback

My advice would be try to go out to take photos in different weather conditions. The unpredictability of weather can make you learn to adjust to different conditions. As for snow photography, I would try to find a central object that has colour to help contrast with the white snow.
